The Easy Way to Make Liquid Soap

  • 1 tsp of finely grated soap*
  • 200ml of boiled water
  1. Mix the grated soap with the boiled water
  2. If the grated soap doesn’t dissolve fully, then either heat mixture in a microwave on high at 30 second intervals or place in a bowl over a pot of boiling water and stir gently until no pieces are visible.
  3. Leave to cool
  4. When cool poor the liquid into a soap dispenser.

If the soap is too thick when it’s cools add 30ml of water and reheat, stir and leave to cool to cool again. Repeat until soap is desired consistency.

A little goes a long way so be mindful of using not too much grated soap . If you do you’ll find you have to add in lots and lots of water to make it liquid enough, resulting in way too much liquid soap!

Alternative sources of Liquid Soap

If this doesn’t work for you or you don’t want the hassle you can get refills of bodywash or liquid soap in quite a few zero waste / health food stores around Ireland. Just check my Map of Eco Stores

Alternatively Swedish company Forgo will post you powder soap that you just mix with water in a dispenser of your choosing.

    1. It has been for me. The main issue is knowing how much water to add and making too much in one go. I’ve learned that it’s better to use a small amount of grated soap to begin with and to add small amounts of water each time, measuring as I go, until i get the right consistency. Once I’ve done that the first time I know the proportions for that soap from then on. If you do make too much just store it in a jar until you need to top up your soap dispenser. Also if you can get one of those foaming soap dispensers you can have foamy soap!
